Why we overthink decisions and how to prevent it | Allow failure!
Losing... Something we all try to avoid but in the same time learn from. You probably reading this right now because you are searching for tips how to evolve your business or brand. Education and research are and will always be good things for business owners. The more you know the better chance for succeeding you got. Its that simple.
But now to the real reason I felt the need to write this post. All of you reading this need to understand this blog is not only to help brands with their marketing strategies. It is also a way for me to learn more and to document my advice for myself to read when I need it. That means I need to listen to my own advice which I know is a really hard thing to do for a lot of people. We think giving advice and making decisions is the same skill but it’s not to be honest. Isn’t it strange that it often feel like you are super good at giving advice but never actually listen to the same advice yourself? How its so much easier to make other peoples decisions but when put in the same situation you do the wrong thing instead. This is called “The Solomon’s paradox”. Let me explain what is it.
When you are giving people advice your mind is more likely to see the bigger picture and focus on the more important parts of solving the problem. If you are making a decision on your own it’s more likely you do the other way around. You look at the problem from every little angle you can find. I think the word we looking for is OVERTHINKING. This is a problem a lot of people have and when starting a brand/business this can do a lot of harm. In the business world you need to act quick in most cases. You don’t have time to think through every decision you make. You can fail once in a while and make the bad call but it allows for that. We adept through failure and most of the times we rise stronger the next time.
As human beings we make decisions every minute of our lives. What do you want to drink, what temperature you want to shower in, how long do I want to sleep? If we are making decisions every minute then why is some decisions so hard? This is because we as humans develop what are called “heuristics”. Heuristics you can describe as shortcuts in our mind to help us make small decisions to prevent us from analyzing every decision we do in our life. These heuristics usually makes us smarter and more efficient decision makers but it there is also some negative sides to it as well. If we don’t have to analyze decisions where there already is a experts opinion. What then happens when the experts is wrong? Obviously what happens is that we chose the wrong decision. We fail in different words.
To bring this to a conclusion I mean that the world allow you to fail. Everyone fail and make bad decisions once in a while and you cant let that stop you. If you want to achieve your goals whatever it is in life you need to stop overthinking and allow failure. Fail, learn and rise stronger!
